CARE Partnership with Youth
CARE secured community investors and funds to provide a summer program for 130 teens from seven different gangs that were willing to make a commitment to non-violence. The young people worked together cleaning and painting properties for elderly and disabled households in a six-block area. The participating neighborhoods expressed their gratitude by hosting block parties on the weekends.
Junior High – High School youth establish personal goals and agree to:
• Complete daily homework assignments
• Attend school
• Demonstrate appropriate behavior in their home, school and community
• Maintain a daily journal
• Attend three-hour life skills classes each week
• Perform four hours community service each week
Youth who meet their commitment are rewarded with stipends or other incentives.
